Coalition Business

The next Central Wisconsin Tobacco Free coalition meeting is Wednesday, April 12th from 1:30-3:30 PM at Portage County Health and Human Services Department (817 Whiting Ave, Stevens Point). At our meeting we will be working with coalition participants to determine the direction of the coalition within each community. Be sure to come to the meeting if you wish to help guide the coalition’s direction and focus. We hope to see you there!

Mental Health & Smoking

At our February coalition meeting, participants discussed working to reduce tobacco disparities. While there are many tobacco related disparities our coalition will be focusing their efforts on reducing tobacco related disparities within individuals with substance abuse issues and mental health illness.

New truth Campaign Highlights Disparities

The truth campaign launched two new ads during the Grammy’s on Sunday, February 12th. The ads address disparities head on by showing how specific populations experience more tobacco advertising than others. The first ad highlights the density of tobacco retailers near schools that serve low income families. The second focuses on the importance of the African American market to the tobacco industry.

Tobacco Companies Taking Over the E-Cigarette Industry

E-cigarettes have gained popularity and tobacco companies are taking notice. Today e-cigarette sales amount to $5 billion worldwide- where cigarettes amount to $92 million. And it is estimated that the e-cigarette industry will grow by 24% per year through 2018.
